With the newest version of the HTC One already on the shelves, many people are trying to decide if it is worth upgrading from the M7 to the M8. The M8 is still constructed almost entirely out of metal (one of the best features of this phone, especially if you’re a user who is prone to dropping, throwing, or just in general, abusing your tech), but features a larger screen and some improved specs and design. The One is still heads and shoulders above any other smartphone HTC makes, but it is the best Android on the market?
Design
After the slightly awkward design of the HTC One M7, it looks like HTC has finally got the One figured out. The M8 is thin without feeling flimsy, it has a good weight in the hand and though it is a little bit bigger than the last generation, it is definitely easy to hold. One of the best features is a rounded back panel, which makes it very easy to hold, as it fits naturally in the hand.
The brushed metal exterior is beautiful, and gives the phone a very high-end and professional look though it’s just as functional as it is beautiful. There are very few sharp lines on the M8; the design favors curves instead. It definitely looks futuristic, but it also doesn’t look like it’ll be out of style any time soon.
Speakers
The front-facing speakers have been a selling point with the HTC One, and they have only being improved on the M8. The company reports that the speakers can now be turned up even higher, without losing any quality in the sound. HTC is calling these speakers “BoomSound,” which is also a software function that crisps up any audio you are listening to.
Battery and Processor
Though the battery isn’t anything special, the Snapdragon 801 that the M8 is sporting is plenty efficient and the operating system itself has been pared down so that normal phone tasks do not sap as much battery as it used to sap. This means that even avid phone users can get longer use out of a single charge—which is great for people who don’t like carrying a charger around with them but want to be able to stay in touch at the same time.
Estimates range from 15 hours for heavy users, to over 24 hours for only occasional users. There’s also a new feature included with Snapdragon 801, called Quick Charge that helps the phone to charge faster than ever—so that plugging it in for fifteen minutes before you run out the door will actually make a difference.
