Nokia Lumia Icon, White 32GB
Though the Icon is only available on Verizon, right now, if you are a Verizon customer, it’s by far the best Windows Phone on the market. Because app developers have finally started to pay attention to Windows Phones, now is the best time to jump on the bandwagon if you’re looking to defect from either Apple or Android to a more streamlined experience. The design and materials have shifted from previous incarnations, combining what was most loved from former generations for an entirely new phone. It is packed with great tech, which even people who don’t like the plainness of the OS can’t deny makes this smartphone a definite contender.
Design
What the Icon lacks in size (compared to previous generations) it makes up for in design. The screen takes up the entirety of the front of the phone, with very slim edging on all sides, and only a thin navigation strip on the bottom. The phone itself has aluminum edging with a Gorilla Glass display and a smooth plastic backing, which currently comes only in two colors—white and black. With a black phone and a black screen background, the screen appears even larger than it already is.
Even with the aluminum siding, the phone itself if fairly light, giving it presence in the hand without making it difficult to operate. While the siding itself will probably take a beating over the life of your phone, a few scratches on the metal will be worth protecting the phone’s innards from falls and jolts.
Inside
Now that we’ve moved onto Windows 8, we are seeing quite a few new advances on the update that comes standard with the Icon. Of course, like almost any smartphone, the Icon comes loaded with some Windows, Nokia, and Bing apps, but unlike iPhones and Androids, any of these can be uninstalled the moment you have the phone in your hands.
It’s important to note, however, that developers have finally begun to view Windows as a legitimate market and the app store now has the same or equivalent apps that are available on Apple and Android. Overall, most people agree that the updated software makes Windows a real contender in the smartphone market.
Battery and Processor
The Icon has the best Snapdragon processor on the market, making it possible to run multiple apps at the same time, without lag. After reading the specifications on this phone, there was some concern that the improved processor and screen would cut down on battery life, but even very heavy users are seeing a solid twelve hours of performance, with some battery power left over to get home and plug it in.
