I have heard complaints about the Blackberry's Trackball (for Pearl and Curve) not functioning after using for a few months. Some problems users experienced the trackball got stuck and was difficult to scroll. Or you can still scroll but the motion is not smooth as it used to be. Or the cursor is not moving in the same direction as the Trackball does. The simplest and the safest cleaning without breaking any parts is to remove the Phone's cover. That's the best way to clean the trackball and the sensor. However, you should be very careful not to lose any loose component. There is a silver metal ring that holds the trackball component. Once the ring is removed, you can clean the ball easily. This procedure should be performed with extra care and you should remember the steps to put back the trackball and the ring.

It's easier to say than done if you want to do it yourself. There is currently no replacement part in any of the wireless retail stores. And it highly recommended that you don't open the Blackberry yourself and try to fix it. By doing that, you might lose the manufacturers' warranty. The best thing to do is to send it back an authorized repair shop. Many company owned wireless stores should have technicians available to help you determine whether the problem can be fixed just by cleaning it or if you need to replace the entire trackball. Some of you might not be able to live/work without the phone for a few days. In that case, and if you already bought the device protection insurance, you can simply call to replace the phone. The insurance company will typically ship the replacement (usually a refurbished one) Blackberry in next business day. And if your contract already expired, that's even better. Upgrade or switch to another carrier and you can get a brand new Blackberry phone for free. No kidding. With rebates from carriers, you might be able to score a Blackberry with some money back.
